Gloves Off – A Quality Improvement Project
Patricia Knight and Dr. Sarah Browning, John Hunter Hospital Campus, Australia
Objectives
– Describe the rationale and design of the “Gloves Off!” educational intervention, including its multi-modal delivery strategy aimed at reducing inappropriate use of non-sterile gloves and improving hand hygiene behaviour in acute care.
– Summarise the impact of the intervention on clinical practice, including measurable changes in non-sterile glove use, hand hygiene compliance, and staff knowledge and attitudes about hygiene practices.
– Interpret the environmental, financial, and quality-of-care outcomes associated with the intervention, including reductions in glove purchase numbers, carbon footprint, waste to landfill, and cost savings.
– Discuss practical strategies for implementing similar educational interventions within diverse healthcare settings, highlighting enablers, barriers, and resource considerations for frontline infection prevention teams.
– Reflect on the implications for infection prevention policy and practice, especially in balancing appropriate glove use with hand hygiene optimisation to protect patients and support sustainability goals
